Meta Ineligible Content 0 0

Meta has specific rules about what types of music and audio can be used or monetized on its platform. These policies are designed to protect the rights of artists and music rights holders, and they may affect the visibility or availability of content delivered to Meta.

What does Meta say about using music?

Meta requires that any music or audio added to posts, videos, or streams comply with its licensing agreements and rights.
This means the content must be authorized for commercial use or distribution; otherwise, it may be muted, blocked, or demonetized on Facebook and Instagram.

Types of Ineligible Content

1. Content that is not music

When a recording does not represent a musical composition and incorrectly matches user-generated content.

1.1 Sound Effects (SFX)
Individual sounds or effects that do not contain melody or harmony associated with a musical work.
Examples: explosions, ambiences, button sounds.

1.2 Spoken Word / Speech
Recordings composed entirely of voice or dialogue without melody.

1.3 Podcasts / Radio Shows / Album Commentary
Recorded interviews, radio-style programs, narration, or commentary tracks, even if incidental music is included.

2. Music not authorized for distribution

Recordings that attempt to imitate or infringe on the copyright of musical works.

2.1 Sound‑alikes
Recordings that imitate original artists, use their name or likeness, or attempt to pass as the original artist.
These are not the same as licensed covers.

2.2 Illegitimate Tracks
Music that uses someone else’s recordings without permission, including slowed-down, reverbed, sped-up, sampled, or unauthorized AI-generated versions.

2.3 Unauthorized DJ & Extended Mixes
Unauthorized mixes made by combining multiple recordings sequentially.

3. Music not eligible for monetization

When a recording is not sufficiently distinct from other legitimate or public recordings.

3.1 Production Library Music
Stock music used as background for videos: loops, soundbeds, incidental scores, royalty-free or non-exclusive music.
Original soundtracks and movie scores are not included here.

3.2 Public Domain
Works where both the composition and master copyrights have expired, allowing use, modification, or remixing without a license.

3.3 Insufficiently Distinct Recordings
Recordings that are too similar to other legitimate recordings or public domain works.

3.4 Ambient, Meditation, Yoga, or Sleep Music
Recordings created with soundscapes or sound effects with little to no melody, used as background in spas, meditation, or public spaces.

3.5 Karaoke Recordings
Backing tracks of popular songs with most or all vocal and lyrical content removed.
Includes legitimate karaoke tracks delivered by the original rights holder; original instrumentals are not considered karaoke.

Consequences of not following Meta rules

If Meta detects content that does not meet its requirements for original music, the following may occur:

  • The audio may be unavailable on Facebook or Instagram.

  • Videos may be muted or blocked.

  • Content may lose access to monetization features.

These actions are automatic and rely on Meta’s detection technology.

Recommendations to avoid blocks

  • Ensure you have exclusive rights to the music you submit for use on Meta.

  • Avoid including audio that may be considered non-musical or without clear licensing.

  • If you are unsure about rights, consider excluding Meta from your release until ownership is verified.
